Description

A row of four cottages, possibly originally a single house, dating to the 16th or early 17th century, with a mid-20th century cross wing added to the left. The cottages are constructed of coursed lias rubble with a tile roof, incorporating some old tiles, and brick ridge stacks. The layout extends from an L-plan to a U-plan. The cottages are one storey and attic, with a five-window front. The front of No.17 faces Church Road.

Architecturally, the arrangement is a baffle-entry plan. No.17 features three ground-floor casement windows and a fire window, with a long, low window above the door. The roof to the right is hipped. The front of Old School Lane has a projecting section for No.17 and a 19th-century lias outshut on the left-hand side. There are three entrances to the cottages, with a lias porch in the centre of No.4 and an entrance to No.6 within the 20th-century wing. Four casement roof dormers are present.

The interior of No.17 features very thick walls, broad-chamfered ceiling beams, and two open fireplaces arranged back-to-back. A room to the right contains a stone winder staircase built into the external corner, which is now blocked off at the top, with a 20th-century straight flight staircase added. The first floor has timber-framed partitions. The roof is exposed, featuring queen strut roof with curved wind braces and heavy timbers. No.2 has broad-chamfered beams and an open fireplace. No.4 is said to contain substantial roof timbers. The mid-20th century Cotswold stone cross wing has a one-window range.
