Description

A group of seven headstones located approximately one meter south of the Lady Chapel to the Church of St Peter in Wootton Wawen, dating from 1700 to 1743. These headstones are made of limestone ashlar. Two of the headstones are adjacent to each other; the western one has a cambered head, while the eastern one features a shaped head. Next is a stone with a round-arched head and incised decoration, inscribed: "In Memory of Joseph Townsend" who died in 1743, along with his wife Mary, who died in 1766, and their daughter Hannah Harris.

To the east of these is a headstone topped with a broken swan-neck pediment that contains a cherub head, featuring a rectangular panel with a moulded frame, although the inscription is eroded. Further east is another headstone with a rectangular panel framed by moulded sides, also surmounted by a winged cherub head, with its inscription eroded. South of this headstone is a rectangular tablet with double-chamfered sides, topped by a broken swan-neck pediment that contains a death's head, with the inscription panel eroded. Finally, to the east is a rectangular tablet in a moulded frame, surmounted by a broken swan-neck pediment with a circular motif inside, and its inscription panel is also eroded.

All these headstones form a cohesive group with the Church of St Peter.
