Description

The Hermitage is a house dating from 1618, with alterations made in the early 18th century, and further additions and alterations in the mid-20th century. The house is constructed of squared ironstone. It has tile roofs and stone stacks with splayed string courses and moulded cornices. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a cross-wing on the right. It is two storeys and has an attic. The front of the house has a mid-20th century porch with a ribbed Tudor arch doorway. There is an angle projection. Most of the stone mullioned windows are 20th century replacements, though some have been restored. The windows generally have hood moulds. The ground floor has windows of 4 lights to the left, and 2 lights to the right; the first floor has 3-lights above the porch, and one-light above. A 20th century box roof dormer is also present. The cross-wing has a restored single-light window, and two small chamfered lights on the first floor. The left return side of the wing has a restored 3-light mullioned window, with a mid-20th century two-light window above. The right return side is a two-window range. The windows are 16-pane sashes with painted wood lintels. Mid-20th century box roof dormers have leaded casements. The rear of the cross-wing has restored 4-, 3-, and 2-light ovolo-moulded mullioned windows. A datestone inscribed 'R.H.' is visible. 20th century additions have also been made to the rear. Internally, a room in the cross-wing features a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, stepped stop broad-chamfered ceiling beams, and another room has moulded ceiling beams. The kitchen has a broad-chamfered beam, and the bedrooms have ogee-chamfered beams. One bedroom has a chamfered Tudor arch stone fireplace. A staircase is present with a 18th-century moulded 2-panelled door.
