Description
This is a group of three chest tombs located 7 meters west of the tower of the Church of St Michael and All Angels in Claverdon. They commemorate members of the Middleton family: Thomas Middleton, who died in 1831, and his wife Ann, who died in 1809; William Middleton, who died in 1829; and Samuel Middleton, who died in 1873, along with his wife Ann, who died in 1868, and their son Edward, who died in 1834.
The tombs are made of sandstone ashlar. The tombs for Thomas Middleton and William Middleton are identical in size, measuring 2 meters long, 1 meter wide, and 1 meter high. They feature ovolo-chamfered plinths with inscribed panels on the sides and incised borders, with Thomas's tomb topped by a hipped slab.
The tomb for Samuel Middleton is designed in the Greek Revival style and has a stepped base, measuring approximately 1.5 meters high, 2 meters long, and 1 meter wide. It has a hollow chamfered plinth and a splayed chest with fluted angles, topped by a hipped slab with ovolo-moulded eaves.
All the listed items in the churchyard form a group with the Church of St Michael and All Angels.
