Description

The Forge House is a house dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with later additions and alterations including extensions to the right, left, and rear in the 1980s. It has group value with The Old Smithy.

The house is constructed with small, square panels of timber-framing, with painted plaster infill, and has a plain-tile roof with pinkish-brown brick stacks. Its original plan was a three-unit, lobby-entrance configuration.

The exterior is single-storey with attics and a three-window front. There are single-storey, single-bay extensions to each end. A brick plinth runs along the base. The ground floor features steps leading to an off-centre left entrance, with a plank door set within a gabled porch. To the right extension is a further plank door. Casement windows are present throughout, with sills, that to the left being situated under a cambered arch. The steeply pitched gabled roof has three gabled dormers, fitted with casements under cambered arches and with sills. A large rear stack is also present.

The interior features a chamfered beam to the left room, supported by a large corbel at the right end. Exposed rafters are visible in the lobby, and the first floor reveals extensive evidence of timber-framing throughout.
