Description
The Rose and Crown Public House is a town house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the early 17th century but was refronted in the early 20th century. The building features a timber-frame structure with a brick plinth at the front and a brick rear range, topped with a tiled roof and brick stacks. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a four-window range.
The first floor has jettied and gabled projections, one to the left of centre and one at the right end. The left projection includes a carriage entrance with paired battened gates. The ground floor windows have wooden mullions and transoms, including a cross-mullioned window at the left end, a three-light window, and a four-light bay window. The first floor features three-light casements, with one cross-casement at the left end. The attic includes a hipped dormer and a gable window to the left, both with two-light casements, and all windows have leaded glazing. A richly designed wrought-iron sign bracket adds to the exterior's character.
Inside, the building retains some chamfered beams and exposed timber-framing. Historical records indicate that the deeds for the property date back to 1683.
