Description

This timber-frame building, now a shop, restaurant, and office, likely dates to the 16th or early 17th century, with later alterations. It has a three-unit and cross-wing plan. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and has a three-window front. A cross wing is located at the left end, to the left of a carriage entrance. A late 19th-century shop front occupies the right end, featuring paired glazed doors with a plate glass window to the left, flanking canted oriels with leaded upper lights, and an entrance with a glazed door to the right end, all sheltered by a tile pentice. The entrance to the left of the shop front has an architrave, frieze, and cornice, with an overlight featuring margin lights above a half-glazed door. The wing has a ground-floor lean-to projection with a segmental-headed entrance housing a studded wide-board door to the right of a large three-light shop window. The first floor of the wing features two windows with three-light casements; one is leaded, and the other has small panes, both flanked by smaller two-light leaded windows, likely original. A similar three-light oriel with small two-light flanking windows is also present on the first floor. The attic has three hipped dormers with two-light leaded casements. An 18th-century rainwater head is located at the left end. The rear of the building features gabled wings. The interior of No. 12, Bobby Brown’s Restaurant, exhibits exposed timber framing and a framed fireplace.
