Description
4 Sheep Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1490, likely in the 16th century, and features a tie beam inscribed with black letters. The building has barge-boards that were restored in 1910 by William Jaggard. The front is timber-framed with plaster infill and some brick, while much of the internal timber-frame remains intact. The roof is covered with fishscale tiles and has a brick stack at the rear.
The structure has two storeys and a single-window range. To the left, there is a small brick section with a modillioned brick cornice, and a larger timber-framed projection. The entrance on the right features a small-pane half-glazed door. The ground floor includes a large five-light transomed window with upper leaded glazing and a grille below, while the first floor has a late 20th-century three-light window with two transoms that replaced a sash window, along with a small leaded window in the gablet.
Inside, the building has chamfered beams, and the first floor showcases roof trusses with close-studded infill. The rear of the building contains two altered roof trusses in the rear wing, which is now enclosed in a larger wing, supported by wall posts.
