Description
This is a group of four chest tombs located approximately 7 meters southeast of the Church of St Mary in Preston on Stour. They date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of ashlar stone.
From north to south, the first tomb is for George Millward, who died in 1783, and Ann Millward, who died in 1822. It features a plain chest on a chamfered plinth, with reeded panels on the ends. The second tomb is for Mary Smith, who died in 1773, and William Smith, who died in 1782. This tomb has a moulded plinth and sunk square balusters flanking two fielded panels on each side, with a moulded top edge. The third tomb has a worn inscription and a date of death of 1771; it is similar to the second tomb but has finer details in the mouldings. The southernmost chest is constructed of brick with an ashlar top slab.
