Description
Lower Binton Farmhouse and Squires Cottage comprise two dwellings, the main part dating to the early 19th century, with a right-hand section likely originating in the 17th century, subsequently altered and restored. The main farmhouse is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a hipped slate roof and brick ridge stacks. It has a double-depth plan. The exterior is symmetrical with a three-window front. Eaves are supported by paired brackets. The central entrance has a 19th-century timber gabled porch and architrave framing paired, half-glazed doors. Windows are pegged casements with six-pane leaded glazing and iron opening casements. The rear elevation is similar, although the entrance has a 20th-century porch and architrave to a half-glazed door. The ground floor has three windows; two with 12-pane sashes and one with a 16-pane sash. The first floor has windows with three-light casements, and one with a four/eight-pane sash. A blocked segmental-headed window with iron bars is present in the basement of the left return, alongside two casements to the ground floor. The right-hand section is built of brick in English bond, with a plastered interior and a steeply pitched tile roof with a brick end stack. It is two storeys high with a single-window front, topped by a modillioned brick cornice. A single-storey wing projects to the right, featuring a doorway. The interior of this section has 20th-century doors and windows. The farmhouse portion is noted to contain a stick-baluster staircase to the rear. The interior of the main farmhouse was not inspected as part of the listing review.
