Description

Hurst House is a house dating to around 1820, with later additions to the rear. It is constructed of stuccoed brick, with a hipped Welsh slate roof and a rendered brick return stack. The building follows a central staircase plan.

The two-storey, symmetrical facade has three windows. Wide eaves are supported by paired brackets. The elliptical-headed entrance has a 20th-century porch with slender fluted columns and a plain frieze. A fanlight with radial glazing bars tops the paired three-panel doors in a moulded frame. The windows have sills and 8/8 sash windows.

The side returns are similar, and a rear wing features smaller sash windows and a modillioned brick cornice. The left return has two offset buttresses to its right end, and a cross-wing to the left end mirrors the front details.

The interior has not been inspected.

The house was in use by 1850 as a private lunatic asylum, associated with Ardenhurst House, and was one of several such establishments in the town.
