Description
Numbers 257 and 259, formerly the Red Lion public house and previously the Old Baker's Shop, are a house and shop dating to the 16th century, with a 19th-century extension to the right and further alterations in 1992. The building is timber-framed, with plastered or brick infill on a rubble plinth. Some areas are painted brick, and the extension to the right is also painted brick. The roof is tiled, with a brick end stack to the rear of the ridge and a massive brick stack to the front of the ridge. The building has a 3-unit plan.
The exterior is two storeys high with a four-window front. The section to the right of centre projects forward. A late 20th-century door and frame replace the entrance to the left end. The forward projection (No. 257) and the right end (No. 259) both have altered entrances with segmental-headed arches, the latter with a plank door set in a pegged frame. The ground floor features two canted bay windows with small-paned glazing, linked by a pentice. The right-hand extension has a segmental-headed window with a 2-light small-paned casement. The first floor has four windows with 2-light small-paned casements; the two windows in the extension have iron opening casements with hanging catches.
The right return has a segmental-headed window with a 3-light small-paned casement on both floors, with iron opening casements. The ground floor of the left half has close-studded framing, while the first floor similarly presents close-studded framing. The rear wing has exposed close-studded framing, partly renewed, with brick infill, and the lower range has been extensively rebuilt.
The interior was not inspected.
