Description
The west gate to Charlecote Park is a gateway arch built in 1865, designed by John Gibson for Henry Spencer Lucy. Constructed from ashlar and wrought iron, it features a round arch flanked by pairs of pilasters that have enriched rustication on their plinths, along with raised-rusticated panels. The top entablature includes a pulvinated frieze decorated with diapering and triglyphs above the pilasters, and a blocking course with a central semicircular panel displaying the Lucy family arms. The archivolt is adorned with enriched rusticated voussoirs and a large console key featuring fishscale designs, while the spandrels display monograms. Small scrolls are present on the returns. The paired gates are topped with decorative finials, and the balustrades exhibit serpentine double curves on plan, with a high plinth and pierced strapwork panels that resemble those on the south wing of Charlecote Park, positioned between paired fluted console piers and topped with moulded coping. This property is managed by the National Trust.
