Description
West Lodge to Charlecote Park is a lodge built in 1865 by John Gibson for Henry Spencer Lucy. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a fishscale tile roof with brick stacks, designed in a cross-plan layout.
The lodge is a single-storey building with a three-bay range. It has an ashlar plinth, quoins, and coped gables with kneelers. The south front includes a central gabled cross-wing with an entrance on the right side. This entrance features a single-chamfered pointed arch and a plank door with strap hinges. The front also has a canted bay with a cornice and cresting, which contains a 1:3:1-light transomed double-chamfered mullioned window adorned with decorative leaded glazing, showcasing Lucy luces and cross-crosslets in red margin lights. A small plaque on the gable displays the Lucy crest.
To the left, there is a double-chamfered cross-mullioned window with leaded glazing, while to the right, a three-bay verandah features faceted rusticated antae and arches with enriched rusticated voussoirs and triple keys. The verandah also has a cornice and a parapet with pierced lattices between panelled piers, which once supported finials. The stack at the crossing of the gabled roofs has clustered octagonal shafts.
The left and right returns each have three-light transomed windows similar to those on the front, as well as gable lights. The rear of the lodge features a central gable with a single-light iron opening casement, above which is a two-light double-chamfered mullioned window with decorative leaded glazing. There is a blocked window on the right return, a round-headed entrance on the left return, and a two-light window with imitation leaded glazing to the left.
The interior has not been inspected. The property is owned by the National Trust.
