Garden walls and steps. 1858. By John Gibson. For Henry Spencer Lucy. Ashlar on brick. Terrace wall and parapet extending round west terrace, including steps to River Avon, along west side of lawn in front of south wing and round west and north sides of croquet lawn. Wall extends approx 41m along west side of terrace, with steps down to central projection of approx 15.5m, which has steps down to river; multi-angular projection to each end. Wall extends approx 25.5m along north side of terrace and then round west and north sides of croquet lawn approx 30m square. Wall extends along south side of west terrace ending in steps up to house and is continued approx 30m south along lawn to west of south wing, with return to south end incorporating wooden gate. Stone-coped brick wall with torus moulding, and quoins to projections; parapet has strapwork panels between piers with fluting and is continued to both sides of river steps. Projections have stone benches. 21 urns of varied design stand at intervals along parapet and to each end of river steps; most have lattice pattern. Gate to south end has same strapwork pattern as parapet. The terrace is axial with the west range of the house, but the double avenue across the river follows the axis of the C16 house and park.
