Description
Canal Bridge Number 48 is a split bridge built around 1812 to 1816, with later restorations. It features brick abutments and walls topped with stone and concrete copings, along with cast-iron rails and decks. The abutments support two cantilevered decks that have X-framed integral handrails and are designed to be split for tow ropes. The parapet walls are splayed.
The South Stratford Canal, of which this bridge is a part, was constructed between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. The National Trust leased 13.5 miles of the canal from Kingswood Junction, Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1960 for restoration and acquired the freehold around 1964.
