Description
Canal Bridge Number 46 is a split bridge built around 1812 to 1816. It features brick abutments that support two cantilevered cast-iron decks. The decks are equipped with cross-framed integral handrails and are designed with splits for tow ropes. The bridge has solid brick, splayed parapet walls topped with brick coping.
The South Stratford Canal, where this bridge is located, was constructed between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. In 1960, the National Trust leased 13.5 miles of the canal from Kingswood Junction, Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon from the British Waterways Board for restoration, and they acquired the freehold around 1964.
