Description

Canal Bridge Number 45 is a split bridge built between 1812 and 1816. It features brick abutments that support two cantilevered cast-iron decks. The decks are equipped with cross-framed integral handrails and are designed with splits for tow ropes. The bridge has solid brick, splayed parapet walls topped with brick and stone coping. The South Stratford Canal, which this bridge is part of, was constructed between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. In 1960, 13.5 miles of the canal, stretching from Kingswood Junction in Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon, was leased by the National Trust from the British Waterways Board for restoration, and the Trust acquired the freehold around 1964.
