Description
Canal Bridge Number 49 is a Grade II listed structure located on the South Stratford Canal in Preston Bagot. It was built between 1812 and 1816 and has undergone later restorations. The bridge features brick abutments topped with stone copings, along with cast-iron handrails and decks. The abutments support two cantilevered decks that have cross-framed integral handrails and are designed with a split for tow ropes. The parapet walls are splayed and include an original fixed iron rod attached to the copings.
The South Stratford Canal was constructed between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. In 1960, 13.5 miles of the canal, stretching from Kingswood Junction in Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon, was leased by the National Trust from the British Waterways Board for restoration, and the National Trust acquired the freehold around 1964. Part of this bridge is also listed in Claverdon Civil Parish.
