Description

The Church of St Mary and St Margaret is a church built in 1866 by John Gibson, which incorporates a chancel from 1831 with some alterations. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ironstone dressings and features a steeply pitched roof made of both old and renewed tiles. The church has a plan that includes a 2-bay chancel and a 5-bay nave, along with lean-to aisles and a bellcote, designed in a style reminiscent of around 1300. The gables are coped.

On the exterior, the chancel showcases a 3-light traceried east window, while the north and south sides feature straight-headed 2-light windows. The aisles are supported by diagonal buttresses and have 2-light windows with head stops to the hood moulds, which are set in gabled half-dormers. The west entrance is notable for its elaborate open-work cusped gable supported by shafts with foliated capitals and large angel corbels, topped by a rose window. The gable also includes a bellcote with a spire and weather-vane, adorned with angels at the corners.

Inside, there is a flower-pot shaped font that may date back to the medieval period. The east window features stained glass by Willement from around 1866, and there is also good stained glass in the west window.
