Description
Herd Hill Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse constructed from squared, coursed limestone, featuring ironstone lintels above the doors and windows, as well as ironstone coped gables. The building has an old tile roof with brick stacks at each end. It has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys plus an attic, with a three-window range. The central entrance consists of a 20th-century plank door with an overlight above it, and a renewed lintel with a keyblock. Flanking the door are 12-pane unhorned sash windows on both the ground and first floors, each with stone sills and lintels that also feature keyblocks. There are 20th-century dormers on either side of the roof. At the rear, there are two 18th-century ranges that are one storey plus an attic, with the right range containing a 16-pane sash window. Inside, the farmhouse includes three open fireplaces; one has a cambered, chamfered bressumer, another has a refaced bressumer, and one features an original baking oven. The interior also has spine beams, some of which are chamfered with ogee stops, and it is said to retain original timbers in the roof.
