Description

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a church with origins in the 12th century, expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries, and restored in 1872. It is constructed of coursed, squared limestone and ironstone ashlar with ironstone dressings, and has an old and new tile roof. The church comprises a chancel, a nave with a south aisle, and a west tower.

The chancel, of 12th-century origin and consisting of one bay, has a plinth, diagonal buttresses, and a coped gable. An east window features three trefoiled lights with reticulated tracery, a hood mould with carved label stops, and a small north window with a single trefoiled light and ogee head, also with a hood mould and carved label stops. Attached to the right is a small outshut. A 19th-century vestry to the south incorporates a chimney, a plank door with moulded surrounds, and a two-light mullioned window with a carved lintel. The nave, spanning three bays, has a plinth, offset buttresses and a coped gable with a restored sanctus bell-cote to the east. Three 19th-century windows line the north side, each with two trefoiled lights and plate tracery, and hood moulds with carved label stops. The south aisle was widened in the 14th century. A 19th-century door is set within a 14th-century pointed ovolo moulded arch with a hood mould and label stops. A 15th-century tower of three stages has plinth, offset diagonal buttresses rising to the bell tower stage, a string course to each stage, and an embattled parapet with carved heads and animals. A 15th-century window of two trefoiled lights is on the west side, with a double chamfered surround and hood mould with carved label stops. Single chamfered lights are present on the north and south sides of the second stage. The bell stage has three two-light trefoiled windows with transoms, stone slate louvres, hood moulds, and label stops.

Inside, the original 14th-century window splays and chamfered arch are visible in the chancel east window. The chancel arch and roof are 19th-century replacements. The nave features a south arcade of three bays with late 12th-century round piers, flat leaf capitals, square abaci, and pointed arches. Responds to the east and west have moulded bases. A small squint allows a view into the chancel. The 15th-century tower arch has double chamfered surrounds and moulded capitals. The nave roof is of the 17th century, with a low pitch, chamfered tie beams, purlins, rafters, stops, carved bosses, and 19th-century angel corbels. A 19th-century roof covers the south aisle. Stained glass from the 19th century is present in the chancel and north wall. Monuments dated 1790 and 1791 are in the north chancel wall. Above the south arcade is a hatchment, and below, a wall tablet dated 1684. A 15th-century octagonal font has quatrefoils and cusped lights around the shaft. A polygonal pulpit dated 1632 is present, though much restored in the 19th century.
