Description

Orchard Cottage is a house dated 1744, with evidence of two distinct building stages. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a coped gable on the right side. The roof is covered with 20th-century tiles and features stone and brick end stacks. The house follows a two-unit plan and originally had a two-storey, two-window front. It contains 18th-century cross casement windows to the first floor, each with a wooden lintel and a stone flat arch, and 20th-century casement windows to the ground floor. The entrance is through a 20th-century gabled porch, and a datestone above the door, inscribed “K/IA/1744”, is set within a moulded hood. Inside, the ground and first floors have chamfered spine beams and joists. A large open fireplace with a chamfered timber bressumer is present. A spiral staircase leads to the attics.
