Pair of Cemetery Chapels on A34 at Sp 2601 3951

This is a pair of cemetery chapels built in the late 19th century. They are constructed from squared, coursed limestone and feature a plinth, quoins, buttresses, and a shaped eaves cornice. The roofs are covered with fish scale tiles and adorned with fleur-de-lys flashings and stone cross finials. The chapels have a Z-shaped plan and are designed in the Decorated style, each consisting of three bays.

The chapel on the right has two-light windows on the east and west sides, featuring cusped tracery, hood moulds, and carved label stops. It also includes a large gabled porch on the north side, which has a moulded, pointed arch, hood mould, and carved label stops, along with three-light cusped windows on either side and a plank door within a pointed arch. The north and south walls of this chapel have additional single and paired lights with Decorated-style tracery.

The chapel on the left has a two-light window with cusped tracery on the east and a single light cusped window on the west, both with hood moulds and carved label stops. A moulded arch doorway on the south side, flanked by pairs of cusped windows, leads into the chapel. There are further paired, cusped windows on the north side.

The chapels are connected by an archway that features a moulded, pointed arch on either side, complete with hood moulds and carved label stops. Inside, a pointed doorway leads to the right chapel, which has cusped windows on either side of the archway. Above the archway is a tower with two stages, topped by an octagonal broach spire with gargoyles and a finial. The first stage of the tower has cusped windows on the east and west sides, while the second stage features two-light cusped windows with a central shaft and moulded capital. One of these windows is partially blocked and pierced with round holes, and above it is a ball-flower eaves cornice. The interior features scissor-braced roofs, and the right chapel contains pews.
