Description

The cemetery chapels, built in 1878, are a pair of adjoining structures located on Cemetery Road in Clay Cross. They are constructed from red brick with sandstone dressings and feature slate roofs adorned with crested terracotta ridge tiles. The gables are stone-coped, with decorative gablets at the eaves and ridge, and include moulded kneelers and ridge finials.

The chapels have a plinth and corbelled eaves, with central porches on either side. A central tower is situated to the south, featuring a trefoil-headed lancet window on the south side and a Caernarvon arched door on the west side. Quatrefoil windows with hoodmoulds are present on all sides above. Flanking the tower are pointed three-light windows with geometric tracery set in recesses, also with hoodmoulds. Above these windows, there is a stringcourse and three blocked stepped niches. The tower has louvred mullion and transomed bell openings on all sides, each with cusped lights, and is topped with a carved stringcourse and corner gargoyles. A pyramidal spire rises above, complete with corner pinnacles and traceried lucarnes on the sides, along with smaller lucarnes on all sides.

On the east elevation, there is a central gabled porch with a double chamfered pointed doorcase and a hoodmould. The porch contains a four-centred arched door with tracery above, and above it is a stringcourse with two florets and a blocked niche in the gable. The north and south sides of the porch feature two-light chamfered mullion windows in terracotta, with trefoil-headed lancets on either side. The west elevation is identical to the east.

The interiors of the chapels are very plain, with the eastern chapel currently used as a store and the western chapel containing plain wooden pews.
