Description
This pair of cemetery chapels was built in 1897 and is constructed from rock-faced red sandstone, forming an H shape with cross wings and a central tower. The roof is slate with a ridge of red crested tiles, and the tower features a stone octagonal steeple. The building has a projecting plinth and ashlar corner buttresses. The main windows are designed in the Decorated style, while the tower and secondary windows are lancet-shaped. There are labels above the doors and windows, and the chapels contain a significant amount of stained glass. The entrance to the central tower has a modern glazed door with a Gothic arch filled with reeded strips, and the side doors are oak boarded with imitation strap hinges. At the back of the cross wings, there are octagonal apses topped with pyramid roofs and a modern wall that fills the space between the apse projections. A crematorium has been added within the building, but this has not affected its original character.
