Description
Widnes North Railway Station, built in 1872, features brown brick walls with a sandstone plinth and a slate roof. The roof includes alternate treble courses of plain and shaped slates, along with lead roll ridges. The station is a single storey with eight bays, arranged in an H plan with cross bays. The gable bargeboards of the cross wings are supported by gallows brackets and are intricately carved in three different designs.
The platform canopy boasts a three-arched fascia decorated with dagger, trefoil, and diamond motifs in quatrefoils, supported by four cast iron octagonal columns. The walls are accented with beaded quoins, and the windows are slightly Gothic-headed sashes arranged in pairs, set back in openings that have splayed reveals and heads. The mullions feature elaborate offsets and stone sills, while the stacks also have decorative offsets.
Original doors include panel infilling made of raking boards. A drinking fountain located against the station wall displays a shell and bullrush motif, with the date '1872' inscribed above it. Inside, the waiting room features a substantial plaster cornice, partially worked on the ceiling, and a fireplace surround with elaborate offsets.
