Description

The Church of St. Luke is a parish church dating back to 1190, featuring a 14th-century tower and alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of red sandstone with a slate roof. The building includes a square west tower, a five-bay nave, side aisles, a south transept, and a chancel that is narrower and less lofty than the nave. There are entrance porches located opposite each other in the north and south aisles.

The tower is supported by corner buttresses and features a curvilinear west window along with smaller louvred windows on all sides at the bell stage. The aisle windows are either curvilinear or lancet in form, while the chancel and south transept have perpendicular windows. The clerestory windows are pitched dormers, and there is very little stained glass present. The tower, chancel, and transept are crenellated, with the chancel adorned with crocketted finials.

Inside, the arcade features Gothic arches supported by octagonal columns, except for the two northeast bays which are circular with stiff leaf caps, common to the memorial chapel. The chancel includes choir stalls with poppyheads. Oak screens separate the chapel from the north aisle and nave, as well as the choir from the organ chamber. The chancel boasts a fine panelled oak ceiling, while the nave has braced collar trusses. The chapel houses notable alabaster and marble monuments dating from 1635 and 1822.
