Description
The Avon Viaduct is a railway viaduct built around 1835. It features a brick structure faced with rusticated sandstone ashlar, highlighted by a strongly projecting moulded string course and a coped parapet. The viaduct has nine elliptical arches and six narrower subsidiary round arches, all with rusticated voussoirs. Canted piers are located between each arch, while larger piers between the main and subsidiary arches, as well as at the ends, are topped with octagonal caps. Two subsidiary arches on the west side are bricked up and mostly concealed by the embankment. This viaduct was constructed for the London and Birmingham Railway.
