Description
Fillongley Lodge is a small country house built around 1830, which incorporates elements of an earlier house. The structure is made of brick and has a stucco finish. It features a low-pitched roof that is hidden by a balustraded parapet, which has been restored and is topped with urns. At the rear, the house has steeply pitched gables covered with plain tiles, one of which includes a timber bellcote with a weathervane. The chimney stacks are made of ashlar and have an entablature. The building has an irregular L-plan and stands two storeys tall.
The principal elevation has a five-window range, with channelled rustication on the ground floor, a band between the storeys, and a slightly projecting centre bay. The windows are 12-pane hung sashes, with the first-floor centre window set in a raised and shouldered surround. There is a Roman Doric tetrastyle portico beneath a dwarf parapet, featuring a pierced centre panel with five circles. The original opening has been fitted with 20th-century double doors. Additionally, there are two 20th-century metal frame casements and two blind window openings with raised and fielded stucco panels.
On the south front, there is a two-storey garden wing that includes later horned hung sashes without glazing bars. Inside, the house boasts a cast iron open-well and open-string staircase with a mahogany rail and winder. There is also a white marble fireplace featuring a central panel depicting St. George and the Dragon. Historical documents reference a mansion from around 1830, and a plan from a deed dated 1853 shows a house with a similar layout to the current building. It is believed that Fillongley Lodge was constructed around 1830 for A.A. Vaughton Esq.
