Description

This is a late 16th or early 17th century house, originally a single dwelling, later subdivided into two properties and now used as shops at 110 and 111 Lichfield Street, Tamworth. The building has a timber frame with brick infill, although the left-hand part has a 19th-century rendered front. It has a steep hipped tile roof with a brick stack set along the ridge. Originally a two-unit plan, it includes a cross wing and a small addition to the right end. The first floor of the cross wing (number 111) exhibits jettied construction with exposed timber framing. Number 110, the original "hall" range, features boarded shop windows flanking the entrance. It has a canopy over the entrance and a segmental-headed entry at the left end. The ground floor of number 111 has a 20th-century shop front, with a former entrance, now glazed, to the small wing at the right end. The first floor of number 111 has 20th-century casement windows, a blind window to the left of the cross wing, and a small square light at the end wing. The rear displays a projecting cross wing. The interior of number 110 reveals exposed wall posts, while number 111 showcases stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, exposed joists, and a roof with heavy collar trusses.
