Description

116 and 117 Lichfield Street is a house that was later divided into two shops. It likely dates from the second half of the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with a rendered front and a tile roof that has brick stacks at the front of the ridge. It has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high with a five-window range. The first floor is probably jettied.

No 116 has a central entrance with a segmental head and a half-glazed door, while No 117 has a similar entrance at the right end. The ground floor includes two segmental-headed windows with two lights, featuring pegged frames and shutter pegs. The first floor has similar windows, with iron opening casements flanking a blind window. No 117 also has a small-paned bow window with a frieze, cornice, and canopy extending over the entrance to the right, along with shutters. The first floor features a three-light mullioned tramsomed window with a casement to the right of the blind window. There is a large central stack and a smaller, later stack to the left.

At the rear, there is a gabled wing with square framing and irregular fenestration that includes casements and entrances. Inside, both floors have stop-chamfered beams and joists, a large fireplace with a bressummer, a smaller later fireplace, and a winding stair in No 116. No 117 has late 19th-century shop fittings, while the rear wing contains an early 17th-century staircase with serpentine splat balusters, and the top flight features a 16th-century fluted timber frieze that has been reused as a handrail.
