Description
This is a cross located approximately 1,000 meters east of Stile House Farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century. It is made of gritstone and features an octagonal base that supports a two-tiered circular plinth. The square tapered shaft stands about 3 meters high and is chamfered to within 100 millimeters of the base. The head of the cross is dowelled, but the cross itself is missing. Its remote location has led to two theories regarding its purpose: it may have been moved to this site or could have served as a plague cross, facilitating transactions between communities affected by the plague and those that were not.
