Description

This is a canal milepost located on the south side of the Trent and Mersey Canal, marked at SJ 9493 2888. It is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on the shaft and is made of cast iron, painted black and white. The milepost has a circular shape with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 43 miles" and "Preston Brook 49 miles." It is likely that this milepost was cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
