Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was originally built as a rectory in the 1770s. It was significantly rebuilt around 1824 and altered again around 1906. The building features rendered brickwork and has a shallow, hipped slate roof with widely projecting eaves and central stacks. It has a square plan with an off-center entrance.
The front of the house is two stories high, with a raised plinth and bands at the first-floor cill. There are four windows that have 20th-century imitations of tourer glazing bar sashes. The door, added in 1906, has a pilastered surround and scrolled corbels supporting a flat hood, along with an overlight that features diagonal glazing bars.
On the garden side, there are two sets of three windows, with the three middle ones arranged in a fall-height angled bay. At the rear, there is a recess supported by two plain columns in antis, without an entablature. The entrance elevation used to be flanked by a wing designed by G.E. Street, which has since been destroyed. An engraving from 1797 in the church depicts the earlier version of the building.
