Description

Longdon Old Hall is a farmhouse that underwent remodelling in the late 17th century to early 18th century, replacing an earlier house. It features red brick construction on a sandstone plinth, with plain tile roofs and raised verges, along with brick lateral stacks. The building consists of two parallel ranges aligned north-south, facing north. The west range includes an entrance passage that runs the full length of the house and ends at the staircase. The structure is two storeys and an attic above a cellar, with corner and central pilaster strips. The front has four windows beneath two gables, with casements that have segmental heads. To the right of the centre, there is a boarded door with a bronze lion head door knocker.

On the west front, two pilaster strips flank a boarded door that has a segmental pointed head, and there is a dentilled eaves band. Inside, the north door leads to the entrance passage, which features a 17th-century dog-leg staircase at its southern end, complete with closed string and splat balusters. The north room of the east range showcases 17th-century oak wall panelling and intersecting cross and spine beams. The east wall of the entrance passage has a long curved tension brace that is only visible from the cellar, and at ceiling height, there is a moulded beam that may be re-used. The south room, which serves as the kitchen in the east wing, has a chamfered and stopped cross beam along with very wide joists. The cellar walls are constructed from massive sandstone blocks. In one of the first-floor rooms of the east wing, there is a cross beam with double ogee moulding, which may also be re-used. The roof trusses include raking struts.
