Description

No. 16, Dam Street is a house dating from the middle to late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The house is constructed of brick with a tile roof and brick stacks. It is three storeys high and has a two-window front. The brickwork features plat bands and a top modillioned and cogged brick cornice. The segmental-headed entrance is above a four-fielded-panel door, with an overlight featuring radial glazing bars. The ground floor has a window with an ashlar sill and an inset canted bay window, which includes a Tudor flower design in its frieze and eight-pane horned sash windows. The first floor has two bracketed canted oriels, decorated with carved grotesque figures, and casements over panels with varied plaster reliefs depicting scenes and figures. The second floor has casement windows with iron opening casements. The oriels are a striking feature of the streetscape.
