Description
10, 10A and 10B Dam Street are two houses that have been converted into shops. They were built in the late 18th century and are constructed of brick with a tile roof and a brick stack. The buildings are two storeys high and have a two-window range. A prominent feature is the top modillioned brick cornice.
At each end, there are segmental-headed entrances with half-glazed doors. The ground floor has large and small segmental-headed windows with brick sills, featuring small-paned casements that include opening panes. The first-floor windows also have brick sills and small-paned casements, but with iron opening casements. A stack is located at the front of the ridge.
The right side of the building, facing Quonians Lane, has been rebuilt later and includes two segmental-headed windows. A plaque on the front notes that this building was Ann Oliver's dame school, where Dr. Samuel Johnson is said to have received his first schooling, although this claim is disputed.
