Description

No. 28 Sandford Street is a house that has been converted into an office. It dates from around 1800 and incorporates earlier elements, though it has been extensively altered, particularly with a large rear addition made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with earlier timber-framing and features a parapeted roof.

It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front, with a single-window end that breaks back to the left. The entrance has a plain doorcase and a fanlight with radial glazing bars above a six-fielded-panel door. There is also an entrance to the left end, which was formerly a carriage entrance, featuring similar details and a six-panel door; most of these details are likely from the 20th century.

The front includes two small-paned bow windows with friezes, while the first floor has windows with sills and segmental heads. Two of the windows are flanked by pilasters, friezes, and cornices, and there is a window with an architrave in the middle. The left end window has a rubbed brick flat arch, and all windows have 12-pane sashes. The second floor has been replaced with a plain coped parapet and a platt band.

The right side of the building shows some elements of timber framing, while the left side features substantial timber framing from a two-storeyed structure with a jettied upper floor. Inside, there are chamfered beams, though the ground floor has been significantly altered. The first floor retains a timber-framed cross wall. Overall, this is a much altered building that still holds features of interest.
