Description

Bridge Number 54, also known as Misseach Bridge, is an accommodation bridge located on the Llangollen Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. It was built between 1797 and 1801, with minor later alterations, as part of the canal designed by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. The bridge is constructed of red brick and features a stone-coped parapet that ends in square corner piers. It has an elliptical arch with projecting keybricks and a string course, along with a late 20th-century oval-shaped plate numbered "54" on the east side. The west side includes a round-headed alcove, which has been infilled on the east side, and contains an iron door that once housed stop-planks used for canal repairs. This section of the Ellesmere Canal was completed around 1801. The Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846.
