Description

Bridge Number 56, also known as Burns Wood Bridge, is an accommodation bridge built between 1797 and 1801, with minor later alterations, as part of William Jessop's and Thomas Telford's Ellesmere Canal. The bridge is constructed of red brick and features a flat stone-coped parapet that ends in square corner piers. It has an elliptical arch with projecting keybricks and a flat string course. On the east side, there is a late 20th-century oval-shaped plate numbered "56." This section of the Ellesmere Canal was completed around 1801. The Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846.
