Description
No. 1 on Shrewsbury Street is a cottage dated 1585, with some alterations from the late 19th century or early 20th century. The building features a timber frame with painted brick nogging and some areas rebuilt in painted brick. It has a plain tile roof and the framing consists of square panels, with three panels from the sole plate to the wall plate, supported by short curved braces. The cottage has two framed bays and is one storey high with an attic.
To the left, there is an external brick end stack, and to the right, a 19th-century integral brick end stack with three circular shafts. The front has two large timber-framed gabled eaves dormers, each with three-light wooden casements and painted imitation trusses. The front elevation has three windows, featuring two- and three-light wooden casements. There is a roughly central boarded door with a 20th-century gabled timber-framed porch. To the right, there is a blocked doorway with a shaped wooden head that is dated "1585 /IW TH". Inside, the structure includes collar and tie beam end trusses with queen struts.
