Description
The churchyard wall located 18 metres south-west of the Church of St Mary is a mid-19th century structure, with 20th century repairs made on an earlier alignment. It is built of coursed stone rubble topped with ashlar coping. The wall primarily serves as a retaining wall and extends along the boundary of Church Street, starting from the broad stone steps at the church entrance and running westward to the gatepier at the western end of the churchyard. This wall is contemporary with the nearby Assembly Rooms. Notably, there is an inset stone panel from the 12th or 13th century featuring a defaced carved figure, likely a shiela-na-gig. The wall was largely rebuilt in its current position due to the widening of Church Street around 1845.
