Description

The Assembly Rooms, located on Church Street in Cleobury Mortimer, were originally built as a market hall and later converted into assembly rooms, featuring a first-floor reading room. The building dates back to 1842 and was remodeled with an upper floor added in 1875. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with a weathered string course, hoodmoulds, and sills on the south and west sides, while the rear is made of coursed stone rubble and blue engineering brick for the rear extension. The slate roof is adorned with late 19th-century decorative bargeboards and fascia.

The exterior of the building is two storeys high. The south gable features a tripartite first-floor sash window with a 1/1:2/2:1 configuration under a hoodmould. The ground floor has a wood mullion and transom window from around 1875, which has multi-pane lights set in a 4-centred arched opening with chamfered reveals and a hoodmould that has defaced label stops. A dated crest plaque is located in the gable, alongside a memorial plaque to the Cleobury Volunteers from around 1900 on the left side.

On the west return side, there is a two-storey, four-window range, with the outer bays being narrower. The first floor has 2/2 sash windows under hoodmoulds, while the ground floor features three similar windows to those on the front gable. To the right, there is a 4-centred entrance arch with an inset iron grill leading into the lobby. The rear of the building is covered by a stone lean-to and a late 19th-century two-storey tiled gabled extension made of engineering brick and coursed rubble, which was formerly used to house the town's fire tender.

Additionally, there is a gatepier made of sandstone ashlar with an octagonal shaft, chamfered plinth, and a pyramid cap with a cornice. This gatepier is connected to the assembly rooms by a two-metre length of spear-head iron railings and is one of a pair located at the west end of the churchyard wall. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
