Description
The Great House, at 112 and 112B Corve Street, is a house dating back to the 16th century, with subsequent alterations. It is timber-framed with a plain tile roof, and includes a base of 18th-century brick for an end stack on the right. The two-storey, two-window-range front features 20th-century casement windows set within close studding; the studs beneath the windows suggest possible oriel brackets, and the eaves retain some wooden brackets. A passageway provides access to the rear, and includes a 20th-century casement in what was formerly an arched opening, as well as an early 20th-century coloured leaded light and a 20th-century bay. A moulded bressummer is also present. The right-hand gable features a rubble wall, in two phases, which butts against the timber frame and supports a protruding rendered gable. The left returned side, beneath the passageway, exhibits a moulded spine beam and ceiling joists. The right wall shows late 18th- to early 19th-century timber framing, with some 20th-century brick infill. The rear elevation shows 20th-century repairs, with a gable and a 20th-century casement above. A rear wing, dating to the late 17th century, is timber-framed and jettied, with a 20th-century door, casements, and a brick stack. The rear elevation of the wing was extensively repaired in the 20th century and was likely originally jettied. The right gable end and rear wing are rubble-faced, with a 20th-century single light and two casements in altered openings. Inside, the space under the passage shows a moulded spine beam and ceiling joists, while the right wall displays late 18th- to early 19th-century framing with some 20th-century brick infill.
