Description

Stone House is a mid-19th century building that now serves as Council Offices, with a core dating back to the late 18th century. The exterior is finished in stucco and stone, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof and features corbelled stucco stacks on both sides. The building has a central staircase plan and stands three stories tall with a three-window range. The front includes two 6/6 sash windows set in moulded architraves, each topped with modillioned pediments on enriched consoles, and flanked by Corinthian pilasters. These are positioned beside margin-glazed French windows with casement panels, all of which have balustered balconettes on a moulded storey band. The upper section features three 3/3 sash windows with shouldered architraves beneath a moulded cornice adorned with modillions and scrolled brackets, leading up to a balustraded parapet.

The central porch has an arch on springers with narrow round-headed openings on the sides and a two-panel, imitation two-leaf door. The returned sides of the building display a returned cornice, frieze, and parapet, along with a first-floor storey band. At the rear, there is a wing that includes a lantern and a half hipped roof, along with a further hipped roof on the rear gable, which features kneelers and a coped parapet on enriched corbels. A stone segmental flat arch is present above a 15/10 sash window, and there is a stone stack with brick above roof level.

Inside, the building boasts an open well staircase with stick balusters, a rear winder stair with similar balusters, ornamental plasterwork including a panelled light-well, and various fireplaces.
