Description
This building is a barn, cart entrance, and loose box, dating from the late 17th century with later alterations. It features a weather-boarded timber frame set on a roughly coursed limestone rubble plinth, topped with a hipped corrugated iron roof sloping to the north. The structure includes a slightly later 2-bay storage loft and loose box positioned at right angles to the east, alongside a 5-bay former threshing barn to the south, which flanks the cart entrance to the farmyard.
On the east front, the barn to the left has five square pitching openings and a central doorway, while the loose box to the right features boarded doors at the front and leading onto the cart entrance. Inside, the framing is visible, consisting of square panels with three sections from the cill to the wall-plate, supported by short straight tension braces, some of which have woven infill. The bay partitions are reinforced with long straight tension braces. The roof has a staggered double-purlin design with slightly raking struts connecting the tie beams to the principal rafters, and collar and tie beam end trusses with struts from the collars. The third bay from the south contains a stone slab threshing floor. The framing in the loose box has been more renewed, featuring a central truss with curved principal rafters and a queen-strut end truss with raking struts from the collar. There is a blocked 17th-century segmental-headed doorway leading to the cart entrance. This range is one side of a farmstead, which is arranged around a square courtyard with the farmhouse located to the east.
