Description
Weir Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with additions and alterations made in later periods. The construction is timber framed with rendered infill on a rubblestone plinth, and it has a reed thatched roof, hipped on the left side. It appears to have originally been three bays wide. The timber framing consists of square panels, three from the cill to the wall-plate, with long straight tension braces. There are four windows facing the front; one is a 20th-century replacement, and one is a late 19th-century casement to the left of a 20th-century glazed door, which sits beneath a contemporary gabled porch featuring a 19th-century three-light casement and a 19th-century fixed-light window to its right. Two eyebrow dormers with slightly pointed eaves, each with a 19th-century casement, are also visible. The rear of the cottage has a 19th-century casement to the left, a 19th-century fixed-light window to the centre, and a late 20th-century casement to the right, all within panels of framing. A prominent timber-framed gabled dormer with intersecting braces to the apex and paired 19th-century casements is located to the left of the centre. A substantial external brick end stack is present on the right side, and a subsidiary 20th-century brick stack is in the rear roof slope. The interior was not inspected, but is likely to be of interest. Modern lean-tos, painted black and white to imitate timber framing, have been added to the left and right sides, and are not considered to be of special architectural interest.
