Description
A row of houses dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, located on Old Street in Ludlow. The houses are built of brick with a Welsh slate roof and feature four brick ridge stacks, the right-end stack having a 20th-century upper section. They are arranged with a 4-unit plan and extend to three storeys, with the two larger end houses also having cellars. The front has a five-window range, featuring 8/8 sashes with painted stone sills, reveals and grooved stucco lintels to the left, then two 6/6 sashes, and finally two more 8/8 sashes in similar settings. The upper floors contain 4/4 and 3/3 sashes, all in similar settings. A brick dentilled cornice runs along the eaves. A pair of matching 6-panel doors, recessed in panelled cases with moulded flat hoods on fluted pilasters, are centrally positioned and flanked by 6/6 sashes. Further doors, also 6-panel with plain overlights in panelled cases and hoods on pilasters (partly restored to the left), are located on either side, alongside 8/8 sashes. An arched and grated cellar opening, with a cast-iron window, is present, along with a blocked window to the cellar of the right-hand unit. The right gable shows a brick front keyed into rubble, supporting the brick stack. The left gable has a roughcast stucco finish and irregular appearance. The rear of number 51 has roughcast walls with late 18th/early 19th century casements and one margin-glazed window. The rear of number 53 is of rubble construction. A late 19th-century, two-storey brick party extension exists between numbers 51 and 53, complete with a brick end stack. The rear of number 55 displays brickwork with a three-storey hipped extension and further leanto extensions, all featuring cast-iron and other casements. The rear of number 57 is of rubble construction and incorporates an inserted brick panel containing a 3/6 sash under a timber lintel at eaves level, and a 6/6 sash under a segmental brick arch below.
