Whiston Hall and carriage entrance attached to NE corner

G.V.

II

Country House and carriage entrance. C1800 (remodelling of an earlier house). Red brick and sandstone, plain wooden cornice to projecting eaves, two rendered axial ridge stacks and brick end stack to left, low pitched hipped slate roof. Three storeys; 1:2:1 windows slightly recessed in centre, glazing bar sashes, 3-light bow windows to left and right on ground floor are later additions; entrance on right-hand return front under Ionic porch. Pedimented carriage entrance with segmental arch to courtyard attached to north-east corner. Mid C19 2-storeyed addition to left. The nature of the sandstone walling and the presence of blocked window openings in the left hand bay are evidence for an earlier house.
